Tim Beresford is the Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Macquarie University. The COO & DVC has overall responsibility for overseeing the University’s finances, internal audit, property, information technology, human resources, legal and general counsel, risk and assurance, health and safety, strategic planning, government relations, sustainability and Macquarie International.
Before joining the University, Tim was Executive Director, Tourism, Investment, Education and Programs Group at the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade). At Austrade, he was responsible for strategic leadership of tourism policy, winning foreign direct investment, promoting international education and delivering the Export Market Development Grants program.
Prior to Austrade, Tim was First Assistant Secretary of the Social Policy Division, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. He also worked at Westpac Banking Corporation for six years in both senior line management and strategy roles and in the professional services sector for 10 years, including McKinsey & Co working across Europe, Asia and Australia.
He was appointed to the Board of The Benevolent Society in February 2013 and is currently Deputy Chair of the Society and Chair of the Research Policy Advocacy Committee. Tim has also been a Board Member of Plan International Australia from 2003-2012.
He has a Masters of Philosophy (International Relations) from Cambridge University, Bachelor Degrees in Law and Economics (First Class Honours) from Sydney University and was a Menzies Scholar in 1994. He is an Associate of the Security Institute of Australia and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
