Smita Sharma
Smita Sharma is an award winning journalist with India’s leading 24/7 Hindi National News Channel IBN7, part of the largest media group of the family Network 18 . She frequently reports for sister concerns of IBN7 including CNN-IBN,CNBC, CNBC_Awaaz and IBN Lokmat. She also writes for Firstpost.com and blogs for ibnlive.com Smita specialised in Radio and Television Journalism from the premiere Indian Institute of Mass Communication in New Delhi in 2003, and has worked with ANI-Reuters and public broadcaster Doordarshan News earlier.
Currently as Associate Editor for Foreign Affairs with BN7, she handles Foreign Policy and Defence Issues . She has interviewed Heads of States and travelled to report on contemporary issues to countries including Pakistan, Syria, China, Maldives, Bangladesh, Australia and USA over the last decade.
Back home she reports on National Political Affairs and follows the situation in Jammu and Kashmir closely.
Her special report on the Kashmir conflict in 2010 recently won her the very prestigious Ramnath Goenka Awards for Excellence in Journalism in the category of Government and Politics Reporting.
She also recently won the Exchange4Media News Broadcasting Award (ENBA) in the category of Best International Coverage for her reports on the Shahbag Protests in Bangladesh.
From Uttarakhand Floods to Tsunami to the Sikkim Earthquake to Fire Tragedy at Hospital in Kolkata,Smita has covered tragedies and conflicts when such unfortunate situations arose.
As an Anchor she hosts Prime Time bulletins on a daily basis as well as talk shows and debates ranging from sports, business, politics to entertainment. She has interviewed several celebrities and top politicians over the years.
Smita has been an Edward R Murrow Fellow to the US covering the Race to White House in 2008. She was also nominated for the John Doherty Fellowship to Australia in 2010, when she shot a special documentary on the Indians in the country and reasons behind series of attacks on them.
When not quite living out of a suitcase she loves her bean bags and her books. She loves reading, cooking and driving. She is a trained Kathak Dancer and loves music and films cutting across borders.
