Nicholas Carney
Nicholas Carney is an infrastructure and finance senior associate in the Sydney office of global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills. He has extensive experience acting for government, banks, consortia, onshore and offshore funds and sponsors in major infrastructure projects, public private partnerships, complex financing transactions, turnarounds and restructures. He has also worked on several major loan portfolio sale transactions and government divestments, and has an interest in hospitals and the health sector. Nicholas regularly acts on cross-border transactions and has worked on the ground in India, Singapore and the Philippines.
He is currently a member of Herbert Smith Freehills’ India Focus Group. Nicholas has undertaken secondments in the legal branch of the New South Wales Department of Premier & Cabinet and at Westpac Banking Corporation.
Nicholas is currently a member of the Council of the University of New South Wales, one of Australia’s leading research and teaching universities, chair of its Risk Committee, as well as a member of the UNSW Faculty of Law Advisory Council. In 2012, Nicholas was awarded a National Volunteer Award (Education category) for the electorate of Sydney for establishing a scholarship and mentoring program between Herbert Smith Freehills and the Come-In Youth Resource Centre, Paddington. The program supports young people who have overcome significant disadvantage to undertake educational programs.
Prior to commencing work at Herbert Smith Freehills, Nicholas was Executive Officer of the Human Rights Act for Australia campaign.
Nicholas was a delegate in the 2014 Australia India Youth Dialogue in Hyderabad and New Delhi.
